He smiles

"Excellent timing Ander."

Grug and the two orks are obviously relieved.

"I don't think I'll ever get used to that," replies Jebediah. "So why did I hallucinate about Jeph? And what in the world does my hat have to do with all this? It's just a perfectly ordinary head covering." His face falls. "Oh no, did the lights Annalyse put in it cause some kind of brain damage?"

The big guy takes a knee before speaking. "Perhaps, but its more likely the chained book guiled you. My apologies for the grief it has caused."

"The chained book? But -- oh. Oooooooooooh." Jebediah finally gets it. "What is that thing, anyway?"

Ander ponders that question for a moment.

"Well for starters, it's a fascinating conversationalist. And as it turns out, incredibly adept at illusory glamours. Which is oddly coincident with my own study of such bewitchments. Perhaps my own meditations on the making of mystical mirages had rendered me more susceptible to this deceitful documents delusions."

Jebediah looks skeptical. "... a book... that talks? And that has the Blessing?"

"Well, I suppose it was probably creating the 'Illusion' of talking. But that's really more of a philosophical distinction than anything else. It does at any rate posses some flavor of sapience and is capable of communication."

Deacon listens intently.

"Is that normal?" He quirks an eyebrow. "For Enchanted objects of power?"

"Well... that depends on the variety of enchanted object I suppose. The mere act of enchanting does not generally imbue self awareness, however there are plenty of more complex rituals which involve the imprisonment of a spirit within an object. It is possible, depending both on the type of enchantment and the strength of the spirit, for this being to retain some level of influence on it's surroundings."

He thinks for a moment.

"... It is also within the realm of plausibility that some being elsewhere is simply communicating through the book. I have not run across any such sorcery that would allow the remote casting of spells through an enchanted object, but I don't have any particular reason to believe it is impossible."

"So you're saying it's possible that the book has... a soul?"
